Emerald Ash Borer: How Do I Treat Ash Trees For Emerald Ash Borer?

Date: August 25th, 2010

CountryMax.com Bonide Tree and Shrub Insect ControlIt is recommended to treat trees twice a year; once in mid-Spring and again in mid-Fall. Mix 1 ounce of product with 1 gallon of water for each inch of the tree’s circumference. I highly recommend Bonide’s Tree & Shrub Insect Control for this purpose, as preparing this product in a drench solution has proven effective against EAB. Remove any mulch or leaf debris from the base of your tree and apply the drench directly around the base of the tree. The soil should be moist, but not drenched, to increase uptake by the tree.

To further protect your ash trees, there are some additional products you should have on hand. A carbaryl-based product, such as Sevin, acts as a cover spray to the foliage and bark, helping to control the adult beetles that feed on leaves from mid-May through August. Also, a fall application of fertilizer, such as Espoma’s Tree-Tone fertilizer, will keep the tree healthy and promote uptake of the systemic insecticide throughout the entire tree.
